I keep getting ads for Canadian dairy. I do what I can to support the industry (i.e. I  love cheese and ice cream).

Watch the video. It’s not about buying product, it’s about who you buy it from.

Consolidation and big food suck. Walmart, Target, etc getting into the grocery business - this isn’t the end, probably just the beginning.

I didn’t watch all of it, but I caught the part about Walmart basically cutting out the middleman and building their own supply chain is kinda fucked.

Would supporting local farms be enough?

To be fair, our system is a lot more protectionist than the States with our quota system (my ex had a large spiel about keeping Americans out of our dairy market), so smaller farms are still feasible without getting bought out.

Oh wow it’s actually not what I thought it was going to be about, given what you do

I can say don’t support Walmart but that isn’t feasible, Walmart has become the single biggest retailer in the country.

Sorry to see it play out like this.

A similar process is happening down here but with somewhat different drivers. What’s interesting is that we don’t appear to be losing farmers.

One bloke I heard from recently said he and his family primarily farmed a mix of improved and native pasture plus a bit of opportunistic annual cropping. They was agnostic about what animals ate the grass... whichever ones are most profitable at the time and could be turned off fastest. The grass is the most important thing. And if the grass wasn’t growing...he destocked . He and his mob are doing ok even now.

His view is that there is no place for sentimentality in farming and good farmers can be good farmers no matter what they farm or where they farm or even the regulations under which they must farm . I’m still wondering how you find out if you're a  good farmer...

I actually looked up this particular farm that got shut down, and it led me to a story saying milk retails for 74c a gallon in KY, which is below cost

Another article I found said that milk consumption hasn’t gone down; it actually went up.

I am sad for these small farms going bust, but not for Dean (the largest dairy produ cer in the country and part of the big food problem)

The small businesses that are not only sustainable but also grow into large businesses all seem to have two things in common - Somebody that’s good at what they do, and somebody that’s good at Do ing Business Shit (tm).

This story is a great example of what can happen as a result of the lack of income diversity. The business goes away when the single big supplier contract goes away. It’s sad, but also preventable.

Banning both Walmart and vegans is the solution, right?

Compelling, thanks for sharing from Wisconsin. Just a reminder, however difficult your day is, someone has it better and someone has it worse.
